Hotels.com price dropped after you booked
To get a lower price on a Hotels.com stay, book the same room again at the new rate with free cancellation, wait for the confirmation, then cancel the old reservation.
Sign in first, or use the Hotels.com app, so you see member prices. Hotels.com and Expedia are the same company, so OneKeyCash works on both, and on Vrbo.
Steps checked against Hotels.com’s own help pages on October 22, 2026.
The steps
Book the lower rate on Hotels.com, then cancel the old reservation.
- 1Book the same room at the new priceSign in first, or use the Hotels.com app, so you see member prices. Same dates, same room, a rate with free cancellation, at the lower price.
- 2Wait for the new confirmation emailCheck that it shows free cancellation.
- 3Cancel the old reservationIn Trips, open the itinerary and choose Change or cancel, or use “Change or cancel booking” in your original email. Check the summary shows no fee before you confirm.
Good to know
- If you paid with OneKeyCash, it goes back to your account when you cancel, unless it has expired.
Four rules that keep you safe
- Book the new room first and see its confirmation before you cancel anything. If the lower price disappears while you switch, you still have your room.
- Same hotel, same dates, same room type, beds and meals. A different room is a different price.
- Never swap a booking with free cancellation for a prepaid, non-refundable one.
- Leave yourself time. Switch well before the free-cancellation deadline, not the night before.
Questions
Do I lose anything by cancelling the old booking?
Not if it has free cancellation and you cancel before the deadline. Check the summary shows no fee before you confirm. OneKeyCash you paid with goes back to your account unless it has expired.
Why book the new room first?
So you are never left without a room if the lower price disappears while you switch.
Will Hotels.com match a lower price on my booking?
Not any more. Hotels.com and Expedia ended their Hotel Price Guarantee on July 28, 2026. Rebooking at the lower price is the way to get it.
