Marriott price dropped after you booked
Marriott’s Edit Room option keeps your confirmation number, but Marriott doesn’t promise it moves you to today’s price. The method that works: book the same room at the lower flexible rate, signed in so the stay earns your points, wait for the new confirmation, then cancel the old reservation.
Skip prepaid rates. They can’t be refunded, so they are never a safe swap for a flexible one.
Steps checked against Marriott’s own help pages on October 22, 2026.
The steps
Book the lower rate, then cancel the old reservation.
- 1Book the same room at the new priceIn the Marriott Bonvoy app or at marriott.com, signed in so the stay earns your points. Same dates, same room, a rate with free cancellation, at the lower price. Skip prepaid rates; they can’t be refunded.
- 2Wait for the new confirmation email
- 3Cancel the old reservationIn the app, Trips, then this stay; or at marriott.com, My Trips. No account: look it up with your confirmation number, name and check-in date.
Good to know
- Used Nightly Upgrade Awards on this stay? Withdraw any request that isn’t confirmed yet before you cancel. A confirmed award comes back only if you cancel the whole reservation by 2 p.m. the day before arrival, and the new booking won’t have the upgrade. Call Marriott first.
Four rules that keep you safe
- Book the new room first and see its confirmation before you cancel anything. If the lower price disappears while you switch, you still have your room.
- Same hotel, same dates, same room type, beds and meals. A different room is a different price.
- Never swap a booking with free cancellation for a prepaid, non-refundable one.
- Leave yourself time. Switch well before the free-cancellation deadline, not the night before.
The Best Rate Guarantee doesn’t cover this
Marriott’s Best Rate Guarantee covers a lower price on another site, claimed within 24 hours of booking. Marriott’s terms say a lower Marriott price found later doesn’t count.
Questions
Will I keep my Bonvoy points?
Yes, if you book the new room on marriott.com or in the Bonvoy app, signed in.
What if I booked my Marriott on Expedia or Booking.com?
Then do it on that site, not with Marriott. Only the site you booked on can change that booking.
I used a Nightly Upgrade Award. Is it safe?
Call Marriott before you cancel anything. A confirmed award comes back only if you cancel the whole reservation by 2 p.m. the day before arrival, and the new booking won’t have the upgrade.
