Is Expedia Price Drop Protection worth it?
Expedia Price Drop Protection is an add-on for select flights. Expedia checks its own price for your exact flight once a day until you fly. If it drops, Expedia pays you the difference after your trip, back to your card.
It covers flights only. Hotels and packages aren’t included, and Expedia’s separate Hotel Price Guarantee ended on July 28, 2026.
How it works
- You pay a fee when you book. Expedia doesn’t publish it; reported fees range from about $7 to $55 a ticket. After 24 hours it can’t be refunded.
- Expedia checks its own public price once every 24 hours until departure. Other sites’ prices don’t count.
- The match must be the same airline, route, times, dates, cabin and fare class. Bags, seats and booking fees aren’t counted.
- You get one payment for the lowest price it confirmed, after every traveler has finished the whole trip.
- One Key Gold and Platinum members get it free on select flights booked in the Expedia app, paid in OneKeyCash.
What can cancel it
- If you or the airline change the flights, the protection can be cancelled and any payment lost. Expedia then refunds the fee.
- If a traveler doesn’t complete the trip, the protection ends and the fee isn’t refunded.
- Expedia decides eligibility. One reported claim was refused because the fare class differed by one character.
Is it worth it?
It can pay off: it works automatically and pays money to your card, not credit. But the fee is a bet that Expedia’s own price for your exact fare will fall, you wait until after the trip to be paid, and any change can wipe it out.
If your fare is Main Cabin or better, you can ask Expedia to reprice the same flights for free when the price drops, and get the difference sooner, usually as airline credit. Don’t do both: a reprice is a change, which can cancel the protection.
It makes most sense if you get it free as a Gold or Platinum member, or if the fee is a few dollars on an expensive flight you’re sure you won’t change.
